I have selected Swamplandia! by Karen Russell as my first Orange July read. I have a ton of Orange books to choose from, but I was drawn to Swamplandia! because it’s set in my home state of Florida. It’s rare to find a Florida book that doesn’t involve sex, crime and drugs. I am halfway through Swamplandia! and enjoying it very much!

Thanks, everyone, for participating! Hope you’re enjoying your books!

My first Orange July read will be The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna. I selected it after a LibraryThing reviewer praised it. And it just so happened that about the same time I had attended a presentation by a lawyer who had worked in Sierra Leone for a year, just after the civil war (the same time period as this novel).

My first book is Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel – 2006 short list. I am 1/2 way through it and it is a creepy, little book. If you have read Wolf Hall, Beyond Black is a 180 degree turn. It’s about a medium with a past and all the mean little ghosties that won’t leave her alone.

My first read for Orange July is Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. I chose that as my first Orange Read for July because it promises to be a Literary Mystery – and I do love a well told mystery! I’m enjoying it very much!

I’m currently reading Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. I chose this one as I said I was going to read it for Orange January – but somehow real life sort of got in the way at that time. Now I’m there… 🙂

Even if I don’t want to be entered in this give away (keeping my fingers crossed for a few other books I have in mind:) ) after I finish reading “Grace Williams says it loud” this weekend, I am going to start Sarah Waters’ “The Night watch” because to my shame, I haven’t read anything by her and it’s been waiting on the shelf for more than a year…

Ally, just to clarify, there is no limit to the number of times you can win a book giveaway throughout Orange July. Once, twice, thrice – it doesn’t matter! So, please let me know if you want to be entered into the giveaway. If I don’t hear from you by 9pm EST, I will assume you DO NOT want to enter.

      Thanks bunches!
      Jill =)

Hi Jill! Thanks for clarifying that! I don’t want to win a book if I am not sure I am going to read it, so maybe there are people really eager to read it and I don’t want to spoil their chances 🙂 I will keep my fingers crossed for the three or four books on the list that I will surely read if I win them 🙂

My first Orange July book will be Great House by Nicole Krauss. I have heard so many amazing things about her work but have never read it. I was lucky to recieve a copy of Great House during BEA so I think it’s a sign that I should start familiarizing myself with her writing.

I’m starting out with The Very Thought of You by Rosie Allison from last year’s shortlist because it was sent to me for review. It didn’t take me long to say yes to that pitch when I heard about its Orange shortlist honors. =)

I’m starting with Larry’s Party by Carol Shields, as it’s the first Orange Prize winner that I haven’t read chronologically. I’m about halfway through right now; I’m a little disappointed as it’s just a massive character study, as if Shields wrote out one of her supporting characters’ backstory and then just decided to make that a book.

My first Orange July read will be Great House by Nicole Krauss. Not only have I heard great things about the book, but I had also enjoyed the author’s previous book, The History of Love. So I have a lot of expectations from Great House.

I’m reading Ladder of Years by Anne Tyler, and loving it. I already have a copy of Wench (which I didn’t realize was Orange-qualified), so I won’t put my name in this drawing.

I am going to be reading Girl With a Peal Earring by Tracy Chevalier.

I loved reading Susan Vreeland’s Girl in Hyacinth Blue last year. Since then I have been keen on reading more fiction about works of art. That is why I chose Girl With a Peal Earring. Hope to enjoy this one too.

I’m reading *A Visit from the Goon Squad* because I’m already a great fan of Jennifer Egan and because an LT friend gave me a duplicate copy. I haven’t read much, but I’m already perfectly happy!

I’m going to read Room by Emma Donoghue. Why? Because I got it at BEA last year and still haven’t read it! And I’ve heard nothing but good things about it so it’s about time.

    Thanks for the giveaway 🙂

I’ll be reading The White Family by Maggie Gee. It got rave reviews from several people on Library Thing, and I usually agree with their reviews. And the subject of racism interests me.

I’ve started reading Book of Fires and am really enjoying it. It was shortlisted for the Orange New Writers Award last year. I am reading it because I found it in a charity shop last month and it’s been calling me ever since.

I do not want to be listed in the give away. I have my eye on another one. For my first book I am going to be reading On Beauty by Zadie Smith. I chose it because reading the book blurb something reminded me of someone I know.

I’ve chosen Scottsboro by Ellen Feldman (although yet to start it). I went to the Orange prize evening at Southbank the year this was shortlisted, and heard each of the six authors read from their books. This one really grabbed me. I’ve been meaning to read it ever since and Orange July is a great excuse to finally do so. Looking forward to it.

I just started reading The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives. I’ve been wanting to read it since last year, mainly because i’m fascinated with polygamy, it’s set in Nigeria (my first time reading this country) and because it has an awesome cover!
